The Nakoma and Nakomis were commissioned by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1923 for the Nakoma Country Club in Madison, Wisconsin. The Country Club was never built until recently constructed by Taliesin architects. The club designs and the sculpture were inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s interest in the ceremonial campgrounds of the Winnebago Tribe, (Ho-Chunks) or “The People of the Sacred Language”. Frank Lloyd Wright shared with the Winnebagos a strong desire for connection with nature and family. The Nakoma is a Winnebago woman holding a bowl, carrying a papoose on her back and a child at her side. Nakomis is a Winnebago Chief.
