This is a smaller version of the large Nakoma statue. The Nakoma and Nakomis were commissioned by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1923 for the Nakoma Country Club in Madison, Wisconsin. The Country Club was never built until recently constructed by Taliesin architects. The club designs and the sculpture were inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s interest in the ceremonial campgrounds of the Winnebago Tribe, (Ho-Chunks) or “The People of the Sacred Language”. Frank Lloyd Wright shared with the Winnebagos a strong desire for connection with nature and family. The statue collection includes a family, mother, child and chief; this represets the values of the Winnebago tribe. The Nakoma is a Winnebago woman holding a bowl, carrying a papoose on her back and a child at her side. Nakomis is a Winnebago Chief. These garden statues of Native Americans were inspired by American’s most famous and illustrious architect; they are indeed beautifully all American.
