This beautiful sculpture of St. Francis of Assisi shows the saint holding a rabbit and gazing a bird perched on his right shoulder. The St. Francis statue is a popular garden ornament because of his close association with animals. In early life, Francis lived a privileged life and his family wealth left him to want for nothing. He led a rather secular career in business and as a soldier even spending a year as a prisoner of war. Very soon after his military experience, he had a vision and a spiritual epiphany, which led him to deny his secular life and tend to the poor, sick, and disadvantaged. His association with animals began with stories of how he would preach to the birds and they would not fly away. In actuality, St. Francis used the example of how the animals were given all the blessings of God and therefore lived their lives happily and without fear. His teaching was that this was how we can live if with have the faith in God’s blessings and gratitude for what we have. St. Francis is the saint closest associated with animals and nature with his feast day on October 4, a day where many communities have a blessing of the animals.
